Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a commonly diagnosed illness in younger children.An estimated 4 million children have been diagnosed, and this number is steadily increasing. It’s one that may or may not continue into adulthood, and it affects a person’s ability to focus,not being able to control one’s behavior, and may have a tendency to be overactive. ADHD is often more prevalent in boys as opposed to girls, but in all reality, ADHD shows no discrimination. Because individuals who are diagnosed with ADHD, often jump from one topic to another,staying on one subject may be difficult. ADHD affects the ability to concentrate, and often school children with this disorder,have a harder time with school work and home work. They may also lack the ability to work quietly or await their turn. Often, sustaining focus on one task at a time seems impossible. They are seen as quite talkative,and may have problems organizing.It is suggested that a diminished blood flow plays a significant part in those with ADHD. Ginseng is another consideration for ADHD, as it is said to improve many symptoms. One of the top herbs for ADHD also, is Bacopa. Bacopa has been used for many years for those suffering from ADHD, as well as Alzheimer’s Disease. It’s tranquilizing effects on the brain and nervous system, are exceptionally beneficial. It also helps with depression, anxiety, stress, epilepsy, memory, and mental deficiency. Bacopa also helps the brain retain new information.Studies have shown in children with ADHD, Bacopa has been known to improve exploratory drive, improve perceptual images, and increase reasoning ability. It improves concentration, memory span and overall mental performance. Bacopa helps cognitive skills. Caffeine is also good for ADHD, but be wary of giving coffee or tea, to children under 12. Caffeine helps stimulate brain activity, and could provide an outlet for better focusing skills. Some adults who had been previously diagnosed as ADHD as children, find their symptoms decrease with age, if they start a regular caffeine regime, usually done with coffee or tea. Although benefits are likely from caffeine, there are too few studies done on the complete effect that caffeine has one ADHD and it’s symptoms. Lavender and Orange Essential Oils are also very helpful for ADHD. Lavender is an anti-inflammatory and carminative.Great for exhaustion and insomnia. Orange Essential Oil is known to be relaxing and uplifting, as well as affecting the limbic section of the brain. Hawthorne could be beneficial as well. Hawthorne is a known heart healthy herb, increasing the circulation in the body, while strengthening the heart. Hawthorne can be taken as a infusion, or as an extract. It’s little red berries can be a very nourishing tonic as well. Passionflower has a sedative effect on the body, and can help promote sleep in an exhausted body.It is also considered a nourishing tonic for both the mind and body. It’s useful in the management of hysteria, and seizures, and a good herb for ADHD.
Be Mindful
Anyone who is considering an herbal remedy or supplement, should always be mindful of possible negative interactions when taking with medications. While most herbs are generally safe to take, always be sure to ask a doctor before taking. If you are allergic to any of these herbs or herbal families of them, please refrain. Children, pregnant and nursing mothers should always practice caution as well. Those who are taking medications currently for ADHD, should not stop them abruptly. There can be very severe withdraws including anxiety, depression, irritability, exhaustion, hyperactivity, psychosis and suicidal feelings. Always consult with your physician about stopping any current medications before taking herbs or herbal supplements.
