An infection caused by the candidiasis fungus in the mouth, is called Thrush. Usually it occurs in newborns and up to six months of age. It’s not as common for older people to develop thrush, but it’s always a possibility. Thrush can be passed from mother to baby when nursing, and can cause little white patches on the inside of the mouth and tongue. Usually, they can be wiped away, but a slight inflammation of the mouth is still present. Once the fungus is under control, nursing becomes much easier again.

From Mother to Baby

The candidiasis fungus is found in the body anyway, but only becomes a problem when there is too much of it. It can be quite painful for both mother and baby, and can cause a loss of appetite as well. While it is suggested that a continuation of nursing will eventually lead to the healing of thrush, an aggressive treatment should also be combined with that. A decreased amount in nursing can lead to dehydration, which is dangerous to the baby. The thrush present on the mother can be painful, making sore, red nipples, and also a feeling of a sharp pain deep in the breast is said to occur. Breastfeeding can make this an extreme pain. If not properly addressed, thrush can form lesions and abrasions. It is very important to take the necessary steps when dealing with thrush, as it is always best to deal with it in the early stages, so it’s not a more serious problem later. Also, thrush can occur in those who wear dentures, have a compromised immune system, or have used inhaled corticosteroids. People suffering from HIV, Diabetes, Cancer, and Vaginitis stand a greater risk also of developing thrush.

Wonderful World of Herbs

In the case of nursing mothers and babies, if the mother takes an herb, the correct and proper dosage will be administered to her infant through her breast milk. It is not recommended to give infants under 6 months anything, aside from breast milk. It is not uncommon for babies who have thrush to also have diaper rash, as the fungus can spread. Most doctors often prescribe Diflucan to combat thrush, and it’s success rate is great. Some mother’s may worry and want to try a more natural approach to treating thrush. Grapefruit Seed Extract is the fore runner in helping heal thrush.Because of its antimicrobial properties, anti-fungal,bactericide, it should have thrush cleared up in a couple days, if used as directed. Garlic is a natural antibiotic, and can be used for thrush.Too much garlic could potentially cause tummy troubles and lead to colic, though. Aloe Vera can be applied topically to relieve the soreness as well as redness of the nipples. Ginger tea is a natural antifungal, and can be added to the diet to promote the healing of thrush. A gargle made of Plantain is also very useful in treating thrush. A healing salve made from Calendula flowers, can help thrush, too. Calendula is known far and wide for the benefits on the skin when applied topically. Also, Calendula, when passed from the mother to the baby’s mouth, poses no risk, although the baby may scoff at the different taste. Some mother’s swear by a baking soda/vinegar solution. A solution made with 8 ounces of water, and a tablespoon of baking soda, can be used on a cotton swab and administered inside the baby’s mouth, cheeks, tongue and gums. One tablespoon vinegar to one cup of water can be mixed together and provides a much needed relief for the mothers sore breasts.Tea Tree Oil is a natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. This can be added to baths to help combat any frequent outbreaks of thrush, and will combat an over-excessive amount of yeast.

Other Important Factors

Good hygiene, plenty of rest, and a diet rich in all kinds of vitamins and minerals, are essential to preventing thrush to begin with. Yogurt, because of its live cultures, is another very good option for thrush. It can be applied topically to any area that is affected by thrush, and some people even use this as the option that works best for them. Putting a small amount on your fingers and running gently in the inside of the babies mouth, can be quite beneficial. It will relieve the pain, as well as promote healing. Be careful, yogurt contains cow’s milk usually, and this is not usually given to children under a year of age.

Side Effects

As with any herbal remedies, it is very important to do all of your research before trying. Ask your doctor beforehand if you are concerned about anything. Some herbs have side effects, and some do not. It is hard to gauge how each herb will react with any given individual. Some are allergic, rendering the herb ineffective. Please practice caution when trying your own herbal remedies.
